Ireland, Without the Rain

October 7 – October 14
While winter settles in here at home, my mind drifts back to a special journey through Ireland that I was fortunate to experience alongside friends who share a passion for travel and links golf.
When people think about golf in Ireland, they picture sideways rain and heavy wind.
We had about two minutes of light drizzle. That was it!
From October 7th through the 14th, our group of 16 golfers and 3 spouses made Portmarnock Resort, just outside Dublin, our home base. For seven days, our tour bus became part of the routine, loading up each morning with clubs, stories from the day before, and that quiet anticipation that only links golf brings.
We played six rounds in seven days, and each one felt different.
Courses:
Jameson Links
The Island Club
The European Club
Portmarnock
Baltray (County Louth)
Killeen Castle
Jameson Links introduced us to firm turf and approach shots that demanded imagination. The Island felt raw and secluded, golf winding through dunes that looked untouched by time. The European Club was bold and unapologetic. Portmarnock was classic and pure. Baltray may have been the quiet surprise of the week, understated and strategic. Killeen Castle gave us something different, inland, pristine, and long enough to make us grateful for carts. Yes, we had carts at Killeen Castle. Don’t judge. You would have wanted them too.
The wind showed up, but it never bullied us. It just asked questions. Could you flight it lower? Could you trust the bounce? Could you accept that sometimes the best shot finishes short and releases perfectly?
Ireland, much like Scotland doesn’t reward perfect swings. It rewards creativity and patience. While the golf was amazing, this trip will be remembered for much more than the impressive links.
It will be remembered with the bus rides filled with laughter. Walking through Dublin together. Temple Bar, which we mostly observed from the outside because apparently half the world was inside. The Guinness factory tour and that first perfectly poured pint, especially the one with our pictures on it. It’s the spouses joining dinners and stories, even if they weren’t grinding through six rounds of links golf.
Ireland has a rhythm: walk, play, laugh, eat, repeat.
Somewhere during the week, scores mattered a little less. The focus shifted to moments, a well-flighted iron into the wind, a putt riding the contour just right, a shared laugh after a tough bounce or taking five swings to finally escape a bunker.
We arrived expecting elements. We got sunshine, firm turf, and a reminder of why Ireland remains a bucket list destination for golfers around the world.
Ireland doesn’t overwhelm you. It reminds you and for seven days in October, that was more than enough.
So what’s next for Theobald Golf Solutions and our UK golf adventures?
It’s time to complete the trilogy of the British Isles.
Scotland, Ireland and coming up next.....Northern England.
More specifically the Lancashire Coast and trust me, this one deserves your attention.
Stay tuned for more details.
